Nigerian domestic carrier Arik Air has ordered three A340-500s. The airline, which started up in October 2006, has a fleet of 16 aircraft, mostly CRJ-200s and -900s and 737s. The A340s are planned for use on future London, New York and Houston routes. The aircraft will be delivered by the end of November 2008. The airline also has two 777-200LRs and three 777-300ERs on order, due for delivery in 2010 and 2011. In April the US Department of Transport gave the carrier permission to fly to the US. It will at first operate with wet leasing from authorized and supervised carriers. This will continue until Nigeria achieves category one status, allowing its airlines to operate their own aircraft in the US. R-3, a former subsidiary of Lehman Brothers, is set to launch a new service converting used CRJs into business jets. The operation is set up along similar lines to Tailwind...
