Transport ministers from the European Union have given their assent to the open-skies deal with the US. The deal was due to start in October 2007 but the UK was able to add a clause delaying it until March 2008.
Following the agreement Irish flag carrier Aer Lingus announced plans to fly Dublin to San Francisco, Orlando and Washington Dulles by the end of the year using A330 aircraft. US carrier Continental Airlines also requested to operate new routes to Europe from the US.
The airline plans to operate into London Heathrow before summer 2008, subject to government approval and obtaining the necessary slots at Heathrow. The airline will retain the services operated from London Gatwick.
