Between a rock and a hard place

For a non-EU passport holder in the UK, the thrill of overseas travel is often stinted by the prospect of queuing outside London embassies at 5am for visas to Europe and the US. So when I was told that a trip to Rio de Janeiro would spare me this bureaucracy, the news contributed to one of the happiest days of my life.

The trip would involve the comforts of an Air France flight on board an A318 from London to Paris and a 747-400 from Paris to Rio.

The transit through Charles de Gaulle gave me a sense of just how big Europe's largest airport really is. The bus ride from terminal 2F to terminal 2E lasted about 10 minutes and took me to the waiting lounge of the AF2171 flight towards the City of God.
