*Before leaving my East London flat for Heathrow on August 10, I switched on the TV travel news to check that my flight to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, was still happening. Unfortunately, the information I had hoped for was dashed by news of an alleged plot to blow up aircraft mid-air between the UK and the US. Although the plot had been foiled, the message was simple: do not go anywhere near a UK airport unless you have to.

But I went to Heathrow, boarded my British Airways flight towards the Silk Road, and took off, only two-and-a-half hours late – needless to say, with no liquids about my person except those inside me.
