EC green lights Berlin Brandenburg financing

The European Commission raises no objections to financing worth up to $4.2 billion for Berlin Brandenburg airport, which will see the German capital’s three airports merge.

The European Commission has given the go ahead to a financing plan worth up to €3.1 billion ($4.2 billion) for the creation of Berlin Brandenburg airport. The plan includes a 100% government guarantee for €2.4 billion in loans.

The project involves merging the German capital’s three airports – Tempelhof, Tegel and Berlin-Schoenefeld – into one new development on the Schoenefeld site. From 2011 all air traffic will pass through Schoenefeld; Tempelhof was closed in late 2008 and Tegel will close when the new...
