Pilarski: how the world has changed

The Boeing Company made an announcement in early July that an order for seven 777s has been cancelled, reportedly by Japan, and an increased order for 30 737s has been received from China. This reinforces the changes in world aviation. In 1984 Japan had over seven-and-a-half times more total air traffic as China. Since then traffic in Japan has more than doubled, but China now has about two-and-a-half times more traffic than Japan.

The changes in traffic are also a reflection of changes in the respective economies, and are the background of changes of a different reality I want to discuss here.

A remake of the classic 1984 movie Karate Kid has just been released. Both versions show economic refugees from eastern US going west in a quest for jobs. In the original movie...
