Looking at the refinancing needs for International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) in late 2009 must have felt overwhelming for the company’s treasury team. But, in the end, ILFC spent 2010 celebrating closing after closing - and it is one of the greatest aviation survival stories of 2010.
ILFC, which spent much of 2009 on the chopping block, raised almost $10 billion one year later with five transactions, including the largest corporate bond secured by aircraft.
Between March 2010 and August 2010 ILFC transformed into a company with diverse sources of financing, new investors and staggered maturities.
Historically, ILFC had funded itself with short- and medium-term commercial paper. So as the markets seized in the aftermath of the financial crisis in 2008, ILFC was facing billions of dollars-worth of maturities, and the markets just did not have the capacity to refinance debt.
